OIS has made an agreement with Unicef to be a Unicef School. A Unicef School speaks out for child rights and promotes tolerance and active participation at school. The nomination requires commitment to the situation of the world’s children and making Unicef’s work known in class and through other school activities. Being a Unicef School offers a new way to incorporate child rights, international issues, tolerance and participation into the school curriculum.
Through our commitment to Unicef, we have a licence to use the Unicef School logo. In our part, we are committed to:
- incorporating child rights and the situation of the world’s children in teaching
- arranging a Unicef event which involves students’ active participation, e.g. fundraising
- reporting about our Unicef activities to the Unicef Office.
In the Middle Years Programme (grades 5-9); students are required to do 10 hours/year of voluntary work.
Fundraising:- One-day Work Campaign
- Thirst Day (Janopäivä) Campaign
- Reading Campaign
- Unicef Walk or Family Picnic
- Bring-and-Buy Sale
- Selling Unicef Products in Spring Fair/parents’ evenings

Photo: On Tuesday 8.5.2007 we collected money to Eritrea. We worked for UNICEF and we did it with UNICEF vests on. It was fun, the people were very nice to us, and we felt that we had done a good job helping people that don’t have clean water. We also felt very important, and it was nice.
